The music of Claude Debussy is standard orchestral repertory these days, but when he composed his now-famous works, Belle Époque Europe hardly knew what to think. From about 1920 to 1950, Stravinsky dominated the realm of neoclassicism, adapting traditional Baroque and Classical forms from the common practice period to a modern perspective.

His talent excused his excessive, impulsive behavior. Then on September 6th comes the birthday of Isabella Leonarda, who was born in 1620 in Novara, a town west of Milan. Haydn quickly re-orchestrated one of his composition scheduled for that evening, for a quartet including himself as a second violinist. For all immediate purposes, it does just as well as the truth, it is much more readily dealt with, and as a marketable commodity its superiority is unquestionable.

For instance, the first theme of "Pagodas" suggests three layers of sound: The main melody is a descending second, which is repeated Ornamental Debussy's melodies often have various kinds of ornaments and embellishments. Yet the impression may stem from deficiencies of the recording, as Debussys playing (renowned for its sensitivity he urged that the piano be perceived as an instrument without hammers) here is shorn of overtones, sounds quite boxy, strict and inexpressive and is afflicted with mechanical flutter.

His aim was to realise " la progression dans Tangoisse "; and if ever he had been able to put on paper the music which he was planning for this terrifying and mysterious tragedy, the world might well have been richer by another masterpiece* Both these works were actually earmarked by the New York Metropolitan Opera, whose manager at the time, Giulio Gatti-Casazza, paid Debussy a nominal sum for their production rights, in spite of the composer's protests that not one note of them had yet been written, and quite possibly never would be. In 1904, Debussy was introduced to Emma, wife of Parisian banker Sigismond Bardac, by her son Raoul, one of his students [2]. But now it's time to get back to the second movement of La Mer, the great Sea piece of his. These works were inspired by the grace, clarity and restraint of the 18th century French composers Rameau and Couperin. See About SMA page for more information on copyright and reproduction.
