Debussy became more productive than ever during this time and composed some of his most lasting works such as La Mer in 1905, Ibéria in 1908 and two books of Debussy’s piano preludes between 1910 and 1912.

Debussy is among the most important of all French composers, and a central figure in European music of the turn of the 20th century. Then there was also the "Minimalists" such as Philip Glass and Michael Nyman who must surely have been aware of Satie's method of combining short phrases and his trend-setting instruction in "Vexations" to repeat a section 840 times.

The crescendo leading to the gong strokes at the end is overwhelming. One of these godparents was an aunt - one ot his father's sisters; the other was a rich banker who patronised the arts, named Arosa, under whose pro- tection this lady, in reality a Mme Roustan, but call- ing herself Octavie de la Ferronniere, was living at that time. Before returning to Paris they spend a few days in London. Debussy’s association with French painters of his time has led some people to label him and his music “Impressionist.” Debussy did share with the Impressionist painters a propensity for depicting nature; the orchestral piece reproduced here, one of three “nocturnes,” is entitled “Clouds.” (Debussy’s “nocturnes” are not related to Chopin’s use of the term.) With Debussy, we enter the “Modern” era of Western art music, an era which presumably continues to the present day.

September 8th marks the 175th anniversary of the birth of Antonin Dvořák. This sonata was one of a series of six instrumental sonatas which Debussy projected. Debussy's body was reinterred shortly afterwards in the small Cimetière de Passy sequestered behind the Trocadéro; his wife and daughter are buried with him. In 1889 he attended the Exposition universelle in Paris where he heard for the first time a Javanese gamelan orchestra.

After a few failed works, Mussorgsky began work on an opera based on Alexander Pushkin’s play Boris Godunov, but this was his last major work. Boulez and clarinet soloist, Robert Marcellus, also introduced American audiences to this less familiar notation on a Cleveland Orchestra tour in 1969." While there, Debussy began defying the standards of the music establishment by his liking for dissonances and unapproved intervals. In 1932, he suffered a traumatic head injury in a taxi cab.
