It is not coincidental that in the United States the social scientific study of religion occupies a minor place in the American Academy of Religion, the umbrella organization for scholars of religious studies, and is instead carried out by separate organizations such as the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, the Association for the Sociology of Religion, and the Religious Research Association. The strongest candidates for such positions that I know of indeed hold PhDs in Area Studies or History, but also have a background (BA or MA/MTS) in Religious Studies.
